Interdisciplinary education learns students to solve problems drawing on multiple disciplines, within and outside their domain. It is about processes that integrate information, data techniques, tools, perspectives, concepts and theories from two or more disciplines. Interdisciplinary learning is a central characteristics of contemporary and design-based education.

Blended learning is an optimal mix of face-to-face education and online learning, allowing for education that is more effective, efficient and varied. When implemented properly blended learning will change and improve the learning experience in courses. New formats of professional learning will emerge and are linked to these blends. The upcoming remote and virtual labs are of special interest to 4TU.CEE.

Dealing with diversity

Lecturers are faced with an increasingly diversity in prior knowledge, level of education, culture, ethnicity, learning style, and motives (intrinsic, societal, economic or career). This requires knowledge and skills from staff and students to enable diverse students to gain excellent results and obtain a solid background in scientific subjects in addition to the capability to perform well in diverse and intercultural teams.

Coaching students can have a positive effect on student learning. In between assessment can be a means to activate students to learn throughout the course. They may prepare students for final assessments and may provide students with feedback on their learning and performance, which in turn may direct their learning. Peer assessments can be helpful for both the assessor and the students whose work is commented upon. Other techniques that help student learning are explored such as gamification and supported self-study. 

Active learning & large groups

Student activity is a key to learning effectiveness and activating audiences is important for education. The combination of teaching methods needed for this might be difficult to use for large groups; especially when engineering students need to gain hands-on experience. The challenge is often to offer engaging education with a lack in facilities and limited availability of costly materials.

Future engineering skills

Specific skills that characterise the future engineer are dealing with uncertainty, ambiguity and risks, problem solving and leadership. Entrepreneurial thinking has been recognised by industry as one of the skills students need to be optimally prepared for the job market. 4TU.CEE considers implementing these future skills in education, and entrepreneurial thinking in particular, as an important topic of interest.
