Project introduction and background information

In this project we will devise ethical guidelines for engineering students on the use of generative AI language models, such as ChatGPT, to accomplish the learning objectives of a challenge-based courses. We will adopt an empirical approach basing our investigation on the challenge-based master course ‘4SC020 Mobile Robot Control’.

We will interview groups of students and teachers regarding their approach on the use of AI generative tool to accomplish each of the learning objectives of the course 4SC020. The relation to assessment and learning activities will be addressed as well. Based on quantitative analysis of students questionnairs and a thematic analysis of the interviews and panel discussions among teachers the course 4SC020 will be re-designed for a.y. 23/24. We will propose guidelines to students on how and when to use AI generative tools during their learning experience in 4SC020. The redesign of the course will be evaluated. The results of the evaluation as well as the set of ethical guidelines will be disseminated in the form of talks at educational lunch colloquia at TU/e and as scientific contributions (e.g., SEFI, national CBL conference and IEEE educon).
