The built environment: risks and opportunities for transformation | Keynote lecture by Georgios Tsionis at the International Conference on Resilient Systems 2026
Drawing on his background in civil engineering, Georgios Tsionis reflected on the venue of the conference – the TU Delft Aula building – noting its striking reinforced concrete structure. A critical lens on resilience | Keynote lecture by Lisa Schipper at the International Conference on Resilient Systems 2026
Lisa Schipper’s keynote lecture challenges the conventional narrative that climate adaptation is universally beneficial. While adaptation or the adjustments that we put in place to reduce harm from climate impacts is acknowledged, it doesn’t happen at the speed that is necessary. The planning for adaptation is there, governments take it seriously, the number of adaptation projects is growing. The pressing question is: Does adaptation really do something?

From theory to impact | Welcome lecture by Maaike Zwart at the International Conference on Resilient Systems 2026
Delft is a city of contrasts. On one side, it’s the city where Antonie van Leeuwenhoek looked through his microscope to observe micro-organisms for the first time and where Vermeer found his inspiration for his luminous paintings. On the other, it faces a quieter, more pressing challenge: the reality of poverty, unemployment, and social exclusion in neighbourhoods like Delft West.
