At the DeSIRE Conference 2022 in November, the 4TU.Centre for Resilience Engineering and the 4TU.DeSIRE Research Programme published two flyers recounting what the Resilience Engineering community stands for. 

It is with pleasure that we look back at the DeSIRE Conference 2022: two days in which all the facets of Designing Systems for Informed Resilience Engineering were touched upon in the full scope of its supporting themes. Through thematic sessions - nicely balancing both inspirational talks by our researchers and interactive tours or workshops, the DeSIRE community showed the results made in the Resilience Engineering domains of Agri, Cyber, Decision-Making, Energy, Ethics, Networks, Urban and Water.

At the DeSIRE Conference 2022 prof dr Theo A.J. Toonen, Emeritus Dean Professor of Institutional Governance and Public Administration, held a speech detailing how the 4TU.DeSIRE Research Programme came into being. On 29 June Tina Comes handed over the Science Advice by European Academies (SAPEA) Evidence Review Report on the EU’s Strategic Crisis Management to Maarja Kruusmaa, member of the Group of Scientific Advisors to the European Commission. The report is to inform the EU’s role in strategic crisis management. Since crises affect virtually all aspects of our societies, the report spans field ranging from the use of data and strategic foresight to dealing with the implications of climate change; from food security to improved governance; from (in-)equality to participation.

The 4TU members, Dr. Maria Nogal and Dr. Rui Teixeira, will be hosting a Mini-Symposium (MS) on the International Conference on Application of Statistics and Probability in Civil Engineering (ICASP14) that will be held in Dublin, Ireland as one of the outputs of their 4TU RE collaboration.

September 7, 2022 the eight Thematic Seminar was held. Here, Sjors Hijgenaar and Vetrivel S. Rajkumar gave a talk about Cyber Resilient Electric Vehicle Charging in Smart Grids and How can cyber attacks on power grids cause cascading failures and a blackout in Europe?

A cordial invitation to the honorary lecture of Carl Folke on Resilience in Leiden on 28 September. Carl Folke is selected as the winner of the 2022  KNAW Heineken Prize in Environmental Science, which is a very influential prize, with some of the former laureates later receiving Nobel.

Some great news about Robbin Jan van Duijne - post-doc in the DeSIRE research program; he has been awarded a Rubicon grant from NWO. July 5, 2022 the fourth Thematic Seminar was held. Here, Firouzeh Taghikhah and Arjuna Srinidhi gave a talk about Integrated modeling of extended agro-food supply chains: A systems approach and Redesigning watershed development to improve climate resilience of semiarid farming systems in India.

The Resilience Engineering Methodologies – DeSIRE Summer meeting took place on June 20th at “Oudaen” in Utrecht. Tatiana Filatova welcomed us and we were happy to welcome several DeSIRE Fellows and Guests in our midst, including Maria Pregnolato, Elena Bakhanova, Ezgi Orhan, Sitong Luo, Rui Texeira, Firouzeh Taghikhah, Beatriz Martinez Pastor, Zahra Sadrian and others.
