The Top Sector High Tech Systems and Materials (HTSM) allocates 1 M€ of the PPS (public-private partnership) allowance to support PDEng projects from the 4TU Stan Ackermans Institute.  From 1 July onwards, 100 PDEng end-projects at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) and the University of Twente (UT), can benefit from extra financial support (10 k€ each). With their contribution, HTSM intends to support the PDEng programmes and their industrial partners in this crisis year in which the collaborative innovation with industry must continue.

4TU.SAI offers 19 different two-year post-master technological designer programmes. In the second year, the PDEng-trainees carry out an in-company design assignment to demonstrate how the knowledge gained is converted into innovative business solutions. It offers companies the possibility to hire a technological designer, a professional who can design and develop complex new products and processes and offer innovative solutions to their technological design issues.

10 PDEng programmes are within the HTSM scope:

  • Software Technology (TU/e)
  • Data Science (TU/e)
  • Automotive Systems Design (TU/e)
  • Mechatronic Systems Design (TU/e)
  • Robotics (UT)
  • Business & IT (UT)
  • Maintenance (UT)
  • Clinical Informatics (TU/e)
  • Qualified Medical Engineer (TU/e)
  • Design of Electrical Engineering Systems (TU/e).

Due to the corona crisis, the industry is hesitant to commit in private to new PDEng projects next year. However, PDEng training programmes are of great value for innovation. PDEng trainees are wanted in industry and most of them are directly recruited during their traineeship. Although many PDEng-trainees are of foreign origin, almost 90% of the PDEng trainees remain in the Netherlands after gaining their degree to work in the high tech industry.

The HTSM contribution allows 4TU.SAI to support new collaborative innovation projects with SMEs and larger companies in the Netherlands. It provides opportunities to train new technological designers in System Thinking and System Engineering, which are essential skills for all engineers of the future.

The HTSM contribution is intended for public-private partnerships in research and innovation  projects in which knowledge institutes collaborate with industry. 100 design projects in the mentioned PDEng programs will be supported: 85 at TU/e and 15 at UT.
