Special Session Announcement: Community-Centric Decision Support for Infrastructure Resilience at the ICONHIC 2026 Conference
4TU.Resilience Engineering researchers are excited to announce a Special Session at the upcoming ICONHIC 2026 Conference focused on Community-Centric Decision Support for Infrastructure Resilience. This session seeks to bridge the gap between technical resilience solutions and the vital societal dimensions that shape equitable, inclusive, and just outcomes.
Motivation
Infrastructure systems face growing challenges from climate change, urbanization, and socio-economic pressures. While current approaches often prioritize cost efficiency and physical asset protection, there is a critical need to integrate community perspectives into resilience planning. This session aims to explore how decision support tools and methods can better incorporate societal needs, vulnerabilities, and equity – ensuring that resilience efforts are not only effective but also fair and inclusive.
Target & Topics
Omar Kammouh, Nazli Aydin, Jasper Verschuur and Srijith Balakrishnan invite researchers and practitioners to share methodological innovations, interdisciplinary research, and practical applications that advance community-centric infrastructure resilience. Topics of interest include:
- Equity-based frameworks, models, and case studies for infrastructure recovery
- Fairness and justice in infrastructure resilience planning and investment
- Resilience Planning Methods for integrating societal risk tolerance and public acceptability
- Modeling interdependent infrastructure systems with societal groups at the core
- Development of community-centric indicators and metrics for performance and resilience
- Participatory modeling and stakeholder engagement in infrastructure resilience planning
- Qualitative and quantitative case studies showcasing community engagement in infrastructure resilience
