Technical Universities honor 3,500th PDEng degree
Chinese Fangyi Shi from the Technological Designer's programme Software Technology was officially honoured on Wednesday 1 October by Rector Magnificus Hans van Duijn of TU/e (Eindhoven University of Technology). She is the 3,500th recipient of the Professional Doctorate in Engineering (PDEng) degree at one of the three universities of technology in the Netherlands since its introduction in 1986. Van Duijn pointed out that the program has accounted for a € 350 million investment in innovation over a 30-year period.

SURFsara strengthens Research Data Netherlands
On 25 September 2014, Research Data Netherlands (RDNL), the collaborative partnership between 3TU.Datacentrum and DANS, welcomed SURFsara. The arrival of this new partner will enable RDNL to assist more academic institutions in the sustainable storage and sharing of research data through a collective approach.

Dutch Data Prize 2014
The Dutch Data Prize for 2014 has been awarded to the Nederlandse Liederenbank (Dutch Song Database) in the category of Humanities & Social Sciences and to DINED in the category of Exact & Technical Sciences. The awards were presented yesterday by professors Karel Luyben (TU Delft) and Kees Aarts (University of Twente).

3TU-CME Master’s Thesis Award for Jella Jongerius
Jella Jongerius (TUD) is the winner of the 3TU Construction Management and Engineering Master’s Thesis award 2014. On the 4th of September, jury chairman Rob Roef (Construsoft) awarded her at the 3TU CME kick-off day at the University of Delft with a cheque to the value of €1000,- .

Innovation for Small and medium-sized enterprises?
On 11 June Dr Martijn Wisse, associate professor and one of the founders of the TU Delft Robotics Insitute, was present at Greentech 2014. On this two-yearly international fair for professionals in the horticulture industry, he presented the prestigious ‘Factory in a day’, a robotic system that can be set up and made operational in 24 hours and is flexible, leasable and cheap. This project makes advanced robot technology available for small and medium sized enterprises.

3TU in the spotlight
The three Dutch technical universities shared a space of more than 50 square metres at the world’s largest industrial fair, with fourteen fascinating showcases presenting some of their latest technologies. The stand in the market’s R&D hall attracted huge interest throughout all five days of the event. At its peak, as many as 400 attendees were present to learn more about the innovations set in train by the three institutions.“The Hannover Messe was an excellent opportunity to show the strength of the Dutch universities of technology,” says IJsbrand Haagsma, Secretary of the 3TU Federation. “Co-operation with global industries, as facilitated through the Messe, is essential to bring smart solutions to the world.”

3TU.Centre for Engineering Education established
The world is in need of more and differently trained engineers who can manage grand societal challenges in the field of energy, safety, health, mobility and environment. Under the guidance of director of education Jan van der Veen of the University of Twente, the CEE will strive to jointly inspire, stimulate, support and disseminate effective and high quality Engineering Education through research and application of evidence-based innovations. These will be bolstered by relevant practical research on a variety of themes, with the results disseminated at home and abroad. The CEE intends to be a leader in its field, the institute of first choice for inquiring, ambitious tutors and scientists from the world of engineering education.
