Workshop on Climate Adaptation and Resilience in the city of Enschede

Wednesday 2 12.00 until 4 December 2026 12.00
Together with the municipality of Enschede, we explore policymaking needs and municipal interests in climate adaptation.

Workshop on Climate Adaptation and Resilience in the City of Enschede

This two-day event unites practitioners and researchers in the development and testing of a concept for end-to-end resilience to climate change and extreme events in the city of Enschede. The municipality has implemented policies and measures for adaptation, risk reduction, and resilience-building, including, for example, a water and climate plan and the improvement of drainage of excess water during flood situations. The municipality has dedicated personnel to assess, plan and coordinate the implementation of adaptation measures.

Much research at the University of Twente has already been conducted in collaboration with the city, including, for example, heat monitoring and air quality measures via sensor networks, mapping for decision support under various climatic conditions, digital twins for urban heat adaptation, and many other initiatives. However, so far, we do not have a complete picture of how this expertise can be aligned to achieve a more holistic response to climate extremes. Needed expertise for an end-to-end resilience approach.

In this workshop we take a comprehensive look, mapping the existing climate adaptation, risk and resilience expertise of the University of Twente along the phases of disaster preparedness, response, recovery and prevention. We will begin by taking stock of lessons learned when planning for adaptation and strengthening resilience to drought, heat and flooding in other cities, using digital tools developed by the University of Napoli (Day 1). Together with the local practitioners of Enschede and other local and regional organisations we will then explore already existing solutions, remaining challenges, and available as well as to-develop scientific expertise at the University of Twente in order to strengthen adaptation and resilience policy and planning holistically (Day 2). The outcome of this workshop is a model for end-to-end resilience mapping that can be applied to other cities.

Location

University of Twente, Enschede, the Netherlands. Exact location will be announced in due course.

Concept Programme

DAY 1 – Weds. 2 Dec: Urban Design Climate Workshop for research community with support of University of Naples.

DAY 2 – Thu. 3 Dec: End-to-end resilience planning with the municipality of Enschede, other regional stakeholders, and researchers

The framework for this workshop series is based on questions addressed through Urban Design Climate Approaches (Simulation Toolkit and Facilitation Toolkit, both of the UCCRN European Hub, Climate change responses)
