Joanne Vinke-de Kruijf

Since April 2025, I have been chairing the Climate-Resilient Infrastructure Systems (CRIS) group at the Civil Engineering & Management Department at the University of Twente.

The CRIS group addresses the challenges facing civil infrastructure by advancing sustainability and resilience. Three key topics play an important role in the group's work:

These topics are realised through collaborations with Dutch government bodies, knowledge organisations such as Deltares, and international partners. Our work is supported by regional, national and European funding.

I am personally especially working on: stakeholder participation, cross-sectoral collaboration, system innovation, learning and transformation processes, boundary judgements, public values, transdisciplinary research approaches, participatory resilience assessment and decision-making processes.

In the BSc and MSc Civil Engineering curricula at the University of Twente, I am introducing students into wicked problems, stakeholder participation, resilience assessment and integrative approaches. I am supervising a wide range of BSc and MSc students as well as PhD candidates and postdocs on these topics.

Through the 4TU RE Centre, I would like to help create a Resilience Engineering movement. Both within academia and in society at large through collaboration with societal partners and institutions.
