First PDEng diploma for trainee Energy & Process Technology

Thursday, 20 March 2014
André Louis MSc. is the first candidate who has received the PDEng diploma of the new programme in Energy & Process Technology (EPT) at the University of Twente.

André Louis MSc. is the first candidate who has received the PDEng diploma of the new programme in Energy & Process Technology (EPT) at the University of Twente. On behalf of the VMI Group company, Louis conducted his technical design project, and on March 4, he received his degree from UT-rector prof.dr. Ed Brinksma.

VMI Group, market leader in the field of production machines in the rubber- and tire industry, wanted to expand its expertise in process technology. The company, located in The Netherlands (Epe), China and Brasil, found the right academic partner in the University of Twente. During his PDEng course, André Louis (Germany, 1981) joined the Department of Elastomer Technology and Engineering (faculty CTW). At the department, he was supervised by Associate Professor Wilma Dierkes.

“This PDEng-programme was the perfect way to gain scientific knowledge and to directly apply it in practice”, Louis says. “Furthermore, new research questions have been raised during my research. My appointment at the University of Twente is therefore extended to a PhD position. I am very proud to be the first one with this PDEng  diploma and I am sure many trainees will follow”.

Complex design issues

In consultation with organizations, the tailor made PDEng programme is designed to educate trainees who are able to design high level, creative and renewing designs for complex issues with a multidisciplinary character. The University of Twente offers three PDEng tracks; Civil Engineering, Energy and Process Technology and Robotics.

The PDEng programmes at the UT started two years ago. General coordinator Timo Meinders is pleased with this first milestone: “The PDEng programmes have a large added value for the industry. From industry, there is a need for professionals who can create designs for multidisciplinary issues individually and to book concrete innovation results. The PDEng programme is a good example of a fertile cooperation between organisations and universities. We notice that the design programmes are popular, especially in the manufacturing industry. Examples are collaborations with Rijkswaterstaat, Hospital group Twente, Friesland Campina, Ballast Nedam, AWL and VDL ETG. Besides, out of the 3TU.Built Environment Center of Excellence, the university receives a co-financing for several PDEng projects”.
