At mechanical engineering (UT) math education in the first year of the bachelor being taught in a new ‘flipped classroom setup’ to offer students more flexibility and stimulate active learning.
Students start with a self-study activity, supported by a structured assignment and online video clips. During a question lecture on Wednesday, students can ask their questions about the self-study activity and work together on assignments. On Thursday, a diagnostic test is available for students to check their understanding of these week’s topics. After a discussion of the test results, students have the option to attend a repair-lecture and work on topics they haven’t fully mastered yet.
Right now, the new setup is being evaluated and student motivation is measured during the course by means of a SIMS1 questionnaire. More information on the results will be presented in the next CEE newsletter.
