Sophie Cramer PDEng Qualified Medical Engineering wins Audience Award best thesis TU/e

Her thesis on the BreatheBuddy, the design of an automatic tactile stimulation device to treat apnea of prematurity, was the most appealing to a big audience at TU/e. Lots of people voted for Sophies’ thesis in TU/e’s annual Academic Awards.

With the annual Academic Awards, TU/e celebrates talents who produce the best thesis. PDEng theses are one category. This year, a new award was introduced: the Audience Award. It was possible to vote for a thesis, which is expected to have the most impact on society, which is the most valuable and the most appealing.

Sophie Cramer developed the BreatheBuddy which enhances caregivers to support preterm infants at the start of their lives. The breathing of preterm born infants frequently needs to be stimulated by gently rubbing or touching their skin. Although nurses aim to do this as soon as possible, they are often not able to respond right away. We developed BreatheBuddy; a device that provides prompt gentle vibratory stimulation right when it is needed.

Sophie has completed her PDEng traineeship as a Qualified Medical Engineer.

Learn more about the BreatheBuddy in this short pitch.

Siddarth Kalate wins award for best PDEng thesis

ASD trainee Siddarth Kalate wrote a thesis about his design of an experimental setup to validate ROP laser surgery device. His thesis was chosen as the best PDEng thesis.

If babies are born early or premature then there is a high possibility that they can become blind because of a retinal detachment condition called Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP). Each year over 15 million babies are born premature, and most of them require ROP treatment. Siddarth Kalates project aims towards developing a device for ROP treatment that is accurate, autonomous and reduces the existing treatment time.

In this pitch, Siddarth Kalate tells more about his award-winning design.

Five other PDEng theses were nominated. Check the pitches of Lars van der A, PDEng Clinical Informatics, Joep van den Bogaert, PDEng Data Science, Anne Graver PDEng Smart building and cities, Ani Megerdoumian, PDEng Software Technology, and Edwin Nam Chun Mui, PDEng DEES.
