In contrast to previous revolutions in technology and work, the professions are more vulnerable to impact and change from artificial intelligence.
The professions - especially the classical professions such as law, medicine, teaching, accounting, academia, and others - have long been characterised both by a particular body of knowledge and a commitment to a public or professional good. Artificial intelligence affects both of these aspects of the professions and those who work in them.
Following our recent Symposium, we invite submissions of papers of between 5,000 – 10,000 words on what artificial intelligence will mean for the professions, and especially for professional ethics.
Research in Ethical Issues in Organizations (REIO) encourages a cross disciplinary approach and aims to draw on a wide range of fields. We encourage authors to submit rigorous research studies (essayistic or empirical) from a wide variety of academic perspectives including (but not limited to) business management, philosophy, sociology, psychology, religion, accounting, and marketing.
Focus of the Special Issue and Suggested Topics
The 2024 AAPAE Symposium brought together a range of scholars and practitioners across disciplines to consider the questions, challenges, and opportunities artificial intelligence represents for those in the professions. There was particular focus on the ethical dimensions as well as what they might mean for the nature of the professions and professionals themselves. Papers addressed the professions across the law, education, medicine, and the military.
Questions of interest include but are not limited to:
- What does AI mean for the professions?
- What does AI mean for professional ethics?
- What does the public have a right to expect of the professions with respect to AI?
- What impact will AI have on education and training pathways for those in the professions?
- What does AI mean for the role of special knowledge in the professions?
Deadlines and Submission Process
Full papers should be submitted to Jacqueline.boaks@curtin.edu.au by 30th of June 2025. All papers will undergo REIO’s double blind review process.
