PRACtESE Sypmosium 16 May 2023

On May 16th 2023, another exciting edition of the Practese Symposium took place. During this international online session, the researchers Shan Tuayerts (University of Leuven), Victor Garcia Galofré (Eindhoven University of Technology and Wageningen University & Research), and Ashley Anderson (University of Melbourne) shared and discussed their research, including challenges in the process and next steps.

In this edition of PRACtESE Symposia, three talented Ph.D. candidates shared their research process and preliminary results with the community.

Shan Tuayerts explored the domain of engineering students' self-regulation—an indispensable skill for lifelong learning. Through a comprehensive survey encompassing students from three KU Leuven engineering faculties, she examined facets like the need for self-reflection, engagement in self-reflection, and insight. Shan's seminar not only unveiled her findings but also fostered vibrant discussions, illuminating this crucial aspect in the field of engineering education.

Victor Garcia Galofré shared the why and how to foster entrepreneurial skills within the field of engineering education. His Ph.D. project aims to define the entrepreneurial engineer, analysing courses that use value-creation pedagogies and ultimately design and test specific interventions. Victor's presentation stimulated engaging conversations about strategies to equip (all) future engineers with an entrepreneurial mindset, enabling them to actively contribute to sustainable transitions and transformations.

Ashley Anderson questioned the effectiveness of conventional multiple-choice tests as tools to measure efficacy in educational research and tackled the issue of diversity in participant samples. Ashley's presentation motivated a much-needed dialogue on enhancing the relevance and validity of educational research across diverse learning environments within the field.

This edition of the PRACtESE Symposia served as an enriching platform for fostering dynamic discussions and highlighting the dedication and innovation of young researchers in their fields. We extend an invitation for you to stay engaged, eagerly anticipating the promising future sessions that will further enrich our academic community within the field.
