On October 15th, 4TU.CEE Eindhoven invited Innovation Fund project owners and innovators to come together and learn from each other’s projects, share experiences and extend their network. It proved to be a successful online event with animated discussions.
The event was framed by an introduction from the new dean of the Bachelor college, prof. Ines Lopez Arteaga and a synthesis by the scientific director of TU/e’s Innovation space, prof. Isabelle Reymen. At the heart of the event were workshops on three strategic themes, derived from 4TU.CEE’s strategic agenda and TU/e’s educational vision 2030, where participants had the chance to learn about and discuss the following topics:
- Research perspectives on CBL (prof. Birgit Pepin and dr. Zeger-Jan Kock)
- The ICT-driven engineer (dr. Antoine van den Beemt)
- Ownership in engineering education (dr. Clemens Verhoosel and dr. Alexander Schüler-Meyer)
The presented themes were perceived as being relevant for improving education. Many participants experienced that these themes are related to many of the current educational innovations in their respective domains and projects.
Issues in ownership
The topic ownership, for example, was seen as related to motivating students to become active learners and for learners to become responsible for their own learning. At the same time, it became clear that the shift to ownership requires tutors who have moved from a teaching role towards a new role of facilitator of learning. Accordingly, the affordances of educating tutors for ownership and their new role was identified as a potential roadblock towards more student ownership. The other workshops had similar discussions about potentialities and limitations of the presented themes.
Innovator community
Overall, the workshop provided the participants with valuable insights for their projects and will lead to new ideas for implementing innovation in engineering education. Future events will continue these discussions, with the aim of building a strong community of innovators at TU/e.
