How to design interdisciplinary education

Monday, 26 June 2017
The term ‘interdisciplinarity’ has become a buzzword at TU Delft in recent years. But what is it and how to apply it in your own courses?

The term ‘interdisciplinarity’ has become a buzzword at TU Delft in recent years. But what is it and how to apply it in your own courses? These questions (and more!) were answered in a workshop on strategies for interdisciplinary teaching and learning that was held on 15 June. Some 30 lecturers attended the event. They look back on a stimulating session where they shared tips and tricks with each other and workshop facilitators from the Institute for Interdisciplinary Studies of the university of Amsterdam.

Why?

There is a need for engineers who are not afraid to ask critical questions, who can work together well and look beyond the boundaries of their own field. This means students need to learn more about integrating and applying knowledge, methods and skills from different subject areas and multiple sources. This workshop provided footholds for university teachers who aim to successfully develop, implement and sustain an interdisciplinary approach to their teaching. One of the participants about the workshop: ‘I now know what interdisciplinarity entails and I am better aware of where I can make improvements in my own teaching’.
