Last April a 4TU.CEE report was released on a study regarding bachelor curriculum innovation at the three Universities of Technology. It describes six case studies of programmes that participated in implementing new curricula in order to motivate students to work harder and improve their study success.

The programmes Electrical Engineering and Architecture and the Built Environment were studied at Eindhoven and Delft. Electrical Engineering and Civil Engineering were studied at Twente. Contrary to what was expected, the findings show no real differences between disciplines; the university and the individual circumstances of the programme had greater influence on curriculum innovation.

Overall conclusions are: changing a curriculum will only be set in motion when a need for change is felt by staff; the role of the programme director is crucial as are available resources, since successful curriculum innovation takes time and money. A journal article on this study is being prepared at the moment and findings have been shared recently at the CDIO conference and during a workshop at the faculties involved in Delft.

This report is the follow up of an earlier project in which innovations were described that have been implemented at the three universities. The report on implementing a new curriculum can be found here.
