Is it possible for lecturers to save time and simultaneously increase interaction with students? Yes, it is, according to Kristina Edström and Jakob Kuttenkeuler, lecturers of KTH Stockholm. In the first week of October 4TU.CEE invited them to speak about their approach on effective teaching at TU Delft, TU Eindhoven and University of Twente, during the teaching trick tour. The tricks were received enthusiastically by the audience of lecturers and educational support staff and were tested in a workshop.
Coaching role
Edström and Kuttenkeuler advise lecturers to take up a more coaching role to save time and increase student learning. They illustrated this with an example on assessment. Edström: âGiving extensive feedback on studentsâ reports is not effective, since it is really time-consuming for the lecturer and the student usually does little or nothing with the input.â The two Swedish lecturers rather place the responsibility for this feedback with the students themselves. âWhen assessing each other's reports they learn to actively participate, be responsible and become committed.â This results in an atmosphere where lecturers and students can learn together. Edström: "Lecturer student interaction becomes quality time that is more meaningful and fun." Keynote slides and workshop slides of the teaching trick tour are available. Both TU Delft Delta and TU/e Cursor have posted an article of the workshop.
