National MedTech ambition takes shape in Twente

Univeristy of Twente

The Dutch government today presented its ambition to make the Netherlands the strongest MedTech sector in Europe by 2035. In its announcement, Twente is explicitly recognised as a region where medical technology, healthcare and science come together. Through the University of Twente’s TechMed Centre, the Hospital of the Future programme contributes to the national ambition of accelerating the development, implementation and scaling of medical innovations.

For Twente, this represents an important recognition of the strong regional collaboration that has been built around medical technology and the shared ambition to achieve a tenfold increase in productivity by 2050 through the application of medical technology. This is considered essential to meeting growing healthcare demand while addressing future workforce shortages.

Within the Hospital of the Future (Ziekenhuis van de Toekomst) programme, healthcare providers, researchers, technology experts, educators and industry partners work together to bring medical technologies into clinical practice more rapidly. New solutions are closely connected to real-world healthcare settings, making it possible to identify what works, what can be scaled up and where further development is needed. This approach aligns closely with the national ambition to accelerate the adoption of innovation across the Dutch healthcare system.

"With our expertise in medical technology, we bring innovations to healthcare practice faster together with regional partners," says Remke Burie, Managing Director of the TechMed Centre at the University of Twente. "The combination of research, education, healthcare and business makes it possible to develop and apply solutions."
