New study investigates how nutrition and exercise support childhood cancer treatment

Wageningen University & Research

Researchers from Wageningen University, together with the Princess Máxima Center, have launched a study into the impact of nutrition and physical activity during the treatment of children with cancer. Over the coming period, the researchers will follow 500 young patients from diagnosis to at least two years after treatment. Their goal is to eventually provide practical lifestyle advice to parents and healthcare providers, thereby contributing to better treatment outcomes.

This is the first study in the Netherlands to examine on this scale how lifestyle may support the treatment of children with cancer. So far, little is known about how nutrition and exercise affect cancer treatments such as chemotherapy, both in adults and children. Yet doctors and researchers recognize a growing need for this knowledge. During and after treatment, children with cancer often experience either increased or decreased appetite, along with changes in their sense of smell and taste. This can lead to weight loss, weight gain, or nutritional deficiencies. These issues may influence the risk of side effects and the overall success of cancer treatment.
