Four in ten food products sold in line with the Wheel of Five

n 2025, four in ten kilograms of food products sold in supermarkets meet the Wheel of Five guidelines. This is shown by a first national measurement conducted among five Dutch supermarket chains. The differences between supermarkets are remarkable: Lidl scores highest at 45.1 percent, while PLUS has the lowest score at 37.7 percent.

Albert Heijn at 40 percent, Aldi at 40.1 percent and Jumbo at 37.9 percent were also included in the Wheel of Five Monitor.

Making healthy choices

“These figures provide insight into how many kilograms of Wheel of Five products people in the Netherlands actually buy in supermarkets,” says Wageningen researcher Anne-To Vervelde.

“What we see is that people find it difficult to make healthy choices. By redesigning the food environment and promoting healthy products more often, supermarkets can steer purchasing behaviour in a different direction and, in doing so, contribute to a healthier society.”

First steps

The researchers stress that this is a first measurement, which means that no firm conclusions can yet be drawn. The method will need to be further developed and repeated in the coming years, so that trends become more visible and supermarkets can be compared more reliably. Several supermarkets have expressed interest in taking part in a potential follow-up trajectory.

About the monitor

The new Wheel of Five Monitor tracks what proportion of supermarkets’ total sales volume consists of products in line with the Wheel of Five guidelines. To do so, supermarkets work together with researchers from the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM), the Netherlands Nutrition Centre and Wageningen University & Research (WUR).
