Healthcare is under increasing pressure -rising costs, growing demand for care, and persistent staff shortages call for new ways of organising health services. Rapid technological and social innovation is opening the door to smarter, more efficient, patient-centred care- but this requires research, technology, education and practice to come together. On 5 November 2026, the TechMed Centre of the University of Twente in Enschede hosts the 8th edition of the TechMed Event, themed 'Hospital of the Future: Transforming Healthcare with Smart Medical Technology'. It's where professionals from across sectors share knowledge, discover new perspectives and build collaborations that shape the healthcare of tomorrow.
Programme
The programme combines a plenary programme with nine inspiration sessions. The event starts at the core: the urgency of the Hospital of the Future, explored from various perspectives and with an active role for the audience. The day concludes with an interactive keynote lecture by AI expert Hendrik van Zwol. Between the plenary programme items, visitors can put together their own programme from inspiring parallel sessions covering topics such as AI and data-driven healthcare, robotics in healthcare, medical imaging and oncology screening, healthcare beyond hospital walls, technologies for personalised treatment, international MedTech collaboration, the MedTech Twente NextGen Final, and the cross-pollination between defence and healthcare.
The central meeting place of the MedTech sector
Each year, the event brings together 400+ MedTech professionals from over 100 organisations. In the Experience Centre, Innovation Labs and TechMed Talent Area, visitors experience the latest technologies first-hand through prototypes, demonstrations and workshops.

The Hospital of the Future initiative
The Hospital of the Future is an initiative of the University of Twente (UT), Medisch Spectrum Twente (MST), FME and Twente Board, bringing together knowledge institutions, healthcare partners and businesses. Through the use of medical technology, they are developing the hospital of the future so that, despite staff shortages, good care can continue to be delivered.
