The collection examines how aspects of individual lifetime as well as collective intergenerational time shape medical and public health ethics. It explores how temporal dimensions influence medical and healthcare decisions, processes and structures across the life course, including reproduction, ageing, chronic illness, end-of-life care, and resource allocation. It also considers how medical and healthcare practices and innovations influence and transform experiences and structures of time, raising ethical questions about life extension, predictive medicine, care organization, sustainability and justice. Contributions should advance ethical concepts and frameworks that address the significance of human temporality in healthcare, e.g., with regard to personal autonomy or social justice.
Exploring the profound role that individual and intergenerational time plays in ethical theorizing and evaluation with regard to clinical practice, public health, and health policy, topics of interest include:
• Ethical significance of time in medicine and healthcare
• Impact of medicine and healthcare on the temporal organization of individual life and intergenerational relations
• Ethical relevance of symbolic representations of time in medicine and healthcare
• Conditions for better healthcare futures
• Temporal dimensions of ethical concepts, theories, and methods
