Special Issue Superintelligent Robots

Date/deadline: Friday, 31 October 2025

Paper submissions are invited for the special issue of Philosophical Studies entitled: SI Superintelligent Robots. This special issue aims to explore the profound philosophical questions and ethical challenges posed by the advent of superintelligent robots.

DESCRIPTION: The development of superintelligent robots presents both significant and timely challenges that demand thorough philosophical analysis and discussion. These robots, with their potential to surpass human intelligence and capabilities, pose novel questions across various domains of philosophy, including ethics, metaphysics, epistemology, and the philosophy of mind. This special issue aims to consolidate research on these topics, providing a comprehensive framework for understanding the philosophical dimensions of superintelligent robots and proposing solutions to the complex issues they present.

Possible topics of interest include but are not limited to:

Moral Status and Rights:

-Exploring the moral consideration and potential rights of superintelligent robots.

-Comparative analysis of moral status between humans and superintelligent robots.

-Ethical frameworks for integrating superintelligent robots into human societies.

Ethical Implications:

-The ethical implications of deploying superintelligent robots in various sectors (e.g., healthcare, military, labor).

-Issues of fairness, justice, and equality in the context of superintelligent robots.

-Ethical considerations in the design and programming of superintelligent robots.

Control and Alignment:

-The control problem: ensuring that superintelligent robots act in alignment with human values and interests.

-Strategies and mechanisms for controlling or regulating superintelligent intelligence.

-The role of human oversight in the functioning of superintelligent robots.

Epistemological Challenges:

-The epistemological implications of superintelligent robots’ capacity for knowledge and understanding.

-The impact of superintelligent robots on human knowledge systems and intellectual practices.

-Philosophical questions about the nature and limits of intelligence and understanding.

Autonomy, Responsibility, and Personhood:

-The concept of autonomy in superintelligent robots and its philosophical ramifications.

-Responsibility and accountability for actions taken by or involving superintelligent robots.

-The potential for recognizing personhood in superintelligent robots and the criteria for such recognition.

Societal and Existential Risks:

-Analysis of societal risks and benefits associated with superintelligent robots.

-Long-term existential risks and the potential for catastrophic outcomes.

-Mitigation strategies and policies to address the risks posed by superintelligent robots.
