HEErI Publications

A book series on Higher Engineering Education research and Innovation initiated by the 4TU Centre for Engineering Education and published via TU Delft OPEN Publishing.

What is the HEErI book series?

A book series on Higher Engineering Education research and Innovation, initiated by the 4TU Centre for Engineering Education and published via TU Delft OPEN Publishing.

HEErI focuses on evidence-informed innovation in higher engineering education, connecting innovative teaching practices, education research, and policy and is aimed at engineering educators, course and programme coordinators, educational managers, educational policy-makers, and educational scientists.

The series shares new insights on curriculum design, engineering pedagogies and didactics, and engineering education policies. With this series, we provide cross-institutional experience, research and critical knowledge in specific subjects, providing a portfolio of leading resources on engineering education innovation.

Tell me about the first volume

Adaptive Performance, Conceptualisation and Mechanisms in Engineering Education, published in March 2026, focuses on how engineers learn to handle new and complex problems in changing environments. It looks at what adaptive performance really means, how it develops, and how educators can support and assess it in both classrooms and workplaces. The book brings together international contributors and offers inspiration for designing learning environments that prepare engineers for real-world challenges.

Sounds interesting. I would like to suggest a topic for a future publication

Great. CEE is looking for contributions from the 4TU engineering education community and beyond for future books. There are currently more volumes in the pipeline, but we are interested in working with you to expand our series and reflect the experience and innovations in our wider community.  Read our guidelines on how to submit a proposal for more information. Please send your completed book proposal form to: Remon Rooij (TUD) – r.m.rooij@tudelft.nl The book series editors will review all book proposals based on the criteria listed in the Proposal document.

Anything else I should know?

All books in this series should address the following three key areas:

Engineering curriculum design: e.g. addressing curriculum contents (discipline), complex societal challenges (SDGs), engineers of the future (roles), technological leadership, entrepreneurship, systems thinking, creativity, design, responsibility, inclusiveness, diversity,  ICT and data literacy, computational thinking, etc.

Engineering pedagogies and didactics: e.g. technology-enhanced learning, activating education, feedback & assessment, learning environment, multi- inter- transdisciplinary learning, constructive alignment, group work, intercultural communication, portfolio development, self-leadership, curriculum agility, reflection in engineering, durable and transferable skills, datafication and AI, etc.

Engineering education policies: e.g. degree programs, education innovation, student cohort, faculty development, careers in education, relation to practice and industry, educational leadership and scholarship, student wellbeing, etc.
