Contemporary societal grand challenges, ranging from artificial intelligence to sustainability and global governance, require forms of expertise that transcend disciplinary and institutional boundaries. Addressing these challenges calls for new approaches to higher education that cultivate interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary capabilities. This raises critical questions about the assumptions, aims, design, and implementation of educational programmes that prepare students and researchers to engage effectively with complex societal challenges.
