Discover the Aalto Design Factory, its design principles and how they can work for you in the 4TU.CEE online learning spaces tour!

The Aalto Learning Spaces tour has been recorded. View it here!

Over the last two years 4TU teachers and education support staff discovered the added value of innovative learning spaces for education at the different 4TU institutes. Now it is time to become inspired by initiatives of universities abroad. Join the 2-hour virtual learning spaces tour and working session of the Aalto Design Factory (ADF) on 14 December! Director Kalevi “Eetu” Ekman will be our guide.

About Aalto Design Factory

The Aalto Design Factory Model is a platform for integrative interdisciplinary education, research and industrial collaboration, as well as a catalyst for a culture of experimental and problem-based education to promote better learning outcomes. This is all realised in a non-hierarchical, constantly developing collaborative environment in which students, teachers, researchers and business practitioners across hierarchical, professional, and disciplinary boundaries work together.

Kalevi “Eetu” Ekman is Professor of Machine Design at Aalto University School of Engineering. He is also the Director of Aalto University Design Factory, an experimental co-creation platform for education, research and application of product design. His research and education activities relate to integrated product development process, conceptual design phase, prototyping, and especially interdisciplinary co-creation between engineers, designers, and business professionals

"Learning space is like a human. It must have a functional body, but without soul we just have the Frankenstein monster."

Organising collaborative learning at ADF

Are you happy with your learning spaces? If yes, it would be idiotic to plan for any change, wouldn’t it?

Everything that has ever been done for setting up or developing the ADF as a learning environment, has been based on our observations and understanding that we, as students, employers or teachers have experienced challenges in education.

In Ekman’s opinion, we need various, flexible spaces for lecturing, seminars and workshopping, team working, prototyping, testing and sometimes showcasing the results. But the users also need access to those spaces, preferably 24/7. As “owners” of the spaces we should be careful with our attitudes: low threshold for approaching, up keeping a welcoming and warm atmosphere, willingness to listen and help.

You are most welcome to find out how Aalto University organises ADF for collaborative Learning!!
