EIT Digital Master in Cyber Security

The EIT Digital Master in Cyber Security is a two-year, European Master program in Cyber Security, with a focus on Innovation & Entrepreneurship. One of the two years is carried out at the University of Twente.

More information about the EIT Digital Master can be found on the website of the EIT Digital Master School. There, you can also find a list of all the EIT Digital partner universities. Both the University of Twente and TU Delft are EIT Digital partner universities, but only Twente takes part in the EIT Digital Master program in Cyber Security. In the following, we describe what it entails to follow one of the two years of the EIT Digital Master studies in Cyber Security at the University of Twente.

Structure of the Master Program - Entry or Exit?

The EIT Digital Master in Cyber Security is a double degree program with studies at a university in one country in the first year (entry) and studies at a university in another country in the second year (exit). One of these two years can be carried out at the University of Twente. The other year will be carried out at one of the EIT Digital partner universities. The program has an integrated technical content (Technical major in Cyber Security) and business content (Innovation & Entrepreneurship – I&E minor). An integral part of the second year is a Master’s thesis (30 ECTS).

Students who follow one year of their EIT studies at the University of Twente will choose their courses from the same list of courses as students following the 4TU Cyber Security Specialization (see list of courses).

Entry Year at the University of Twente

The first/entry year offers basic Cyber Security courses, such as an Introduction to Security and Cryptography, Internet Security, Software Security, System Security, Cyber Risk Management, and Privacy-Enhancing Technologies. 

An important part of the program are the Innovation & Entrepreneurship (I&E) courses. The I&E basics course (offered in academic quarter 1) provides an introduction to business and management. The Business Development Lab (offered in academic quarter 2) extends media systems engineering projects by a market survey, a business model generation process, and a venture development exercise. We emphasize user driven innovation and holistic analysis of service, technology, organization and financial perspectives, as new technologies are disruptive for existing business models and almost always have a significant impact on the culture and social relations. Society-relevant themes also are at the core of the summer schools, which bring students from the different entry points together.

In the following, we list the mandatory and elective courses per academic quarter (see academic calendar at the University of Twente) for an EIT student who follows his entry year at the University of Twente. The recommended study load per quarter is 15 EC (it is not advisable to deviate from this recommendation!). If not otherwise specified, all courses below are 5 EC each. You require a total of 60 EC in your entry year.

NOTE: In exceptional cases, other elective courses (that are not listed below) can be selected as well. Please consult with your program mentor, Dr. Florian Hahn.

Individual Research Projects

The following courses are individual research projects that can be started anytime during the academic year and are arranged on an individual basis between the student and the teacher:

EIT Off-Site Summer School

A key component in EIT Digital Master School students’ innovation and entrepreneurship education is compulsory attendance at a two-week long summer school during the interval between the two academic years (i.e., after academic quarter 4):

The summer schools are also open to external participants, including secondees from our industrial partners.

Exit Year at the University of Twente

If you are carrying out your exit year of your EIT Master studies at the University of Twente, you will be specializing in "Cyber Security: High Tech, Human Touch". You are required to follow 60 EC of dedicated Cyber Security courses in your exit year. Most importantly, 30 EC (out of those 60 EC) will be used for your final Master Thesis, while yet another 10 EC will be used for the so-called "Research Topics" course, which consists of a 6 EC I&E minor thesis and a 4 EC state-of-the-art preparation for your Master Thesis.
