Nierstichting Research for Health Award 2025 for UT researcher Lennart van de Velde

Thursday, 23 October 2025
University of Twente

The annual Nierstichting Research for Health Award has been granted this year to Amsterdam UMC and the research team led by Lennart van de Velde (University of Twente, TechMed Centre). The team received the award for groundbreaking research into a faster and less burdensome treatment for renal artery stenosis.

Van de Velde and his colleagues developed a new method that uses a single CT scan and a computational fluid dynamics simulation to predict whether a narrowing actually affects kidney function. This allows clinicians to determine in one step whether treatment is necessary. For patients, this means fewer diagnostic tests, faster decision-making, and a much shorter and lighter care pathway.

DREAM OF GLOBAL APPLICATION

The potential impact of this approach is significant. Patients no longer have to wait unnecessarily or undergo treatments that offer little benefit. They receive the right care more quickly, helping them maintain their quality of life. Van de Velde: “My dream is for this method to become available worldwide, so that every patient receives the right care in time, without detours and without unnecessary burden.”
