Workshop on Demand Flexibility in Cyber-physical Energy Systems

Wednesday 22 - 24 March 2023

Workshop on Demand Flexibility in Cyber-physical Energy Systems EEMCS, University of Twente 22 – 24 March, 2023

Are you curious about the energy transition and its challenges? Would you like to learn about the synergy between electrical engineering and ICT solutions to support the energy transition and enable more sustainable energy to be integrated in our systems? Have you wondered how to model and optimize energy-related problems? Find out all about it and join us on our workshop!

The energy transition (transformation from fossil-based to zero-carbon) relies on the electrification of society and is a key driver to achieving environmental goals. This process entails moving from a traditional energy system to a Smart Grid with multiple demand/generation sources, which asks for a synergy between ICT and emerging technologies (electric vehicles, solar panels, batteries, etc.) to keep a reliable energy system. However, this transition involves inherent (technical) issues such as congestion problems in the electrical network and vulnerability of the system due to potential cybersecurity threats. To tackle these challenges, innovative approaches combining ICT and electrical engineering (EE) are needed, demanding a stronger cross-functional collaboration and academiaindustry bonding.

We are organizing a three-day workshop aiming to bring together energy transition enthusiasts with basic programming skills. The event will gather ICT and Electrical Engineering experts with talks on demand flexibility, cyber-physical energy systems, and digital twins. Furthermore, the event will count on a strong hands-on component where participants will learn how to model flexibility in energy communities using Python and the Pyomo library). A real demonstration of the SlimPark pilot project (where smart charging strategies for EVs are deployed via the cyber-physical software platform DEMkit) will also be given.

Info & applications:
The workshop is open to final-year MSc students, PhD students, postdocs, industry professionals, and researchers. We will host only a restricted number of applicants to make sure that the event will be fruitful for all participants, allow for insightful discussion, and knowledge sharing among participants. We will select the admitted people based on the received applications. Please apply here for participating in the workshop (deadline: 28th of February, 2023).

A certificate awarding 2 ECTS credits will be issued at the end of the workshop for participants meeting 100% attendance.

Tuition fee: 100 €
After acceptance of your application, you will receive an email with more information and instructions to pay the tuition fee. The fee covers: coffee breaks, lunches, and a social event (Poster session and networking on Thursday, March 23th). Accommodation and transportation are not included in tuition fees. You will receive a confirmation email and invoice after the payment.

Accommodation:
Accommodation at the U Parkhotel can be provided with a special discount. Please state during your booking that you will participate in the workshop on Demand Flexibility in Cyber-physical Energy Systems. U Parkhotel is located on the campus of the University of Twente. You are welcome to find alternative accommodation yourself.

Organizers:
Nataly Bañol Arias, Gerwin Hoogsteen, Johann Hurink, Juan C. López (University of Twente), Juan S. Giraldo (TNO).
