Artificial Intelligence (AI) and networked computing systems are becoming increasingly interdependent: efficient and powerful networked computing systems are needed to support AI applications (Systems for AI), while AI can greatly enhance the design and operation of computing and network systems (AI for Systems). This synergy and co-design are essential elements for further breakthroughs in key Dutch societal domains, such as healthcare, smart industry, mobility, smart farming, and sustainable ICT. However, achieving this synergy requires close collaboration between traditionally separate communities (e.g., data science and AI, computer systems, and network experts). Significant challenges, such as reliability, scalability, and efficiency of future AI-powered systems, necessitate close collaboration between these communities.
We aim to build a Dutch community to address these challenges and drive innovation at the intersection of AI and systems. We will make joint efforts to develop Robust and Efficient Systems for AI (e.g., energy- and computing-efficient, reliable (embedded/ edge) computing systems and networks) and Effective AI for Systems (e.g., distributed and explainable AI methods to manage and orchestrate shared system resources, address complexity, and to improve systems scalability).
