CompSys++ Expanding the Dutch CompSys Community

CompSys is a key area at the intersection of computer science (e.g., system software, software engineering, parallel and distributed computing, large-scale system, networking and communication protocols) and electrical engineering (e.g., system design, chip design, ICD, neuromorphic computing, in-memory compute, storage technologies). CompSys has an outsized impact on the Netherlands society: for example, two-thirds of the economy and over 3.5 million high-paying jobs depend on CompSys technologies and deployed infrastructure. Forming a CompSys community with a unified research vision and roadmap has started in 2020, and was a continuous effort centered around our common research themes, practices, and successes. The community crystallized around our first manifesto , officially launched in May 2022. Reflecting the capabilities and talent present across 50+ research teams in all universities and academically oriented research labs in the Netherlands, the manifesto outlines the research themes of the community, world-class ambition, and goals for a striving community. To achieve these goals, however, more concerted community efforts are needed. Therefore, CompSys established 9 working groups to support different research lines, as well as the general activities of the community (education, industry, funding, and research practices and infrastructure). For the first time in the Netherlands, the core of the CompSys community is a robust mix of senior and junior members. However, to improve our collaboration with industry, society, other networks and disciplines, and to provide meaningful impact, we must expand our network further, reach out to these other groups, and offer the opportunity to our working-groups to meet and collaborate with stakeholders. This CompSys++ proposal specifically addresses this growth: through the proposed events and support for work-group activities, we will strengthen our collaboration - inside and outside the community - and co-create, with these stakeholders, a CompSys Manifesto++ which will reflect (i) the status update of the community after 5 years of existence, (ii) the development of the broad CompSys fields, and (iii) the connections, present and envisioned, with our stakeholders.
