MEReP Reading Group

Reading Group ā€œ4TU Mathematics Educationā€

What are the essential aspects of learning mathematics? And how can we, as teachers, design and develop the best learning experiences for our students? These are important questions that university mathematics teachers often ask themselves. Less often, however, are teachers aware of current developments in mathematical education research. The field of education is vast and perhaps unfamiliar to many of us, making it difficult to know where to start.

To address this challenge, we are organizing a reading group among mathematics teachers, where we can learn together about effective, up-to-date, and evidence-based approaches to university mathematics education.

The reading group ā€œ4TU Mathematics Educationā€ began in December 2024 as part of the SRI 'Mathematics Education Research Project'. We meet approximately once every two months (about six times per year). Meetings are online and last one hour. Currently, we have about 15 members from five different universities.

We are currently reading Craig Barton’s book "How I Wish I’d Taught Maths". Some of the most important topics we have discussed so far include:

  • The difference between novices and experts
  • Cognitive-load theory
  • Maths anxiety
  • Contexts and ā€˜real-life’ mathematics
  • Achievement and motivation
  • Explicit instruction
  • Theory of multimedia learning
  • The roles of examples, worked-out exercises, and assigned exercises

We also aim to share experiences and compare our different teaching approaches in the context of the materials discussed.
