Crafting Bioreceptive textiles for plant-human interactions

Greening interior spaces through multi-species design offers a vibrant approach to enhancing our living and working environments. Multi-species design allows us to rethink how we share space and resources with other living beings, questioning the current status quo and proposing alternatives to current ways of designing and living with.

The hybrid space divider was conceptualized at Oscar’s plant studio and produced at TUe Wearable Senses Lab. The piece has been deployed at the Fashion Tech Farm since October 2024. In its deployed form, the 2-meter by 70-cm woven cotton textile is placed in a Danish trolley, and 4 climbing plants are growing on it, supported by 4 grow lights and a smart watering system. The climbing plants are Rubus Henryi var Bambusarum, Ampelopsis Aconitifolia, Akebia Longeracemosa, and Momordica Cochinchinensis. Each plant has a different climbing mechanism (thorns, adhesive pads, twining stems, and tendrils).

By integrating bioreceptive textile-based interior design pieces in our homes, we can invite plants to cohabit alongside us, creating dynamic ecosystems that promote well-being and biodiversity.

“What are you willing to share with other living beings?”
