Kamia Handayani

I work at PLN, the state-owned electricity company in Indonesia. In January 2016, I took a study leave to pursue my doctoral degree at the Department of Governance and Technology for Sustainability, University of Twente, the Netherlands. I successfully defended my dissertation entitled: “Electricity & Climate Change: Seeking for the Triple Nexus of Electrification, Climate Change Mitigation, and Climate Change Adaptation” in November 2019.

After completing my Ph.D., I returned to PLN and am currently assigned as the Manager of Climate Change and Environmental Safeguard. My main role is to develop the company’s strategies for climate change mitigation and adaptation to the adverse impacts of climate change to assure low-carbon and climate-resilient developments are included in the company’s long-term strategies. My work unit also ensures the compliance of PLN project activities to the environmental standards required by our international investors.

I published numerous papers in high-ranked scientific journals (e.g. Applied Energy, Energy Policy, Cleaner Production) and has presented my works at numerous international conferences. I also write articles for The Jakarta Post, The Conversation, and Energy Reporters. I was recently selected as an expert reviewer of the Second Order Draft Working Group II of the Sixth IPCC Assessment Report (AR6). I am featured in SOUTHEAST ASIAN WOMEN as one of the women who have contributed their efforts in the field of energy & environment. In 2018, I served on an Expert Panel at the UN Climate Change Conference COP24 discussing the topic of Young Professionalism for Climate Resilience. I was assigned as a Scientific Reporter for the 4TU Resilience Engineering Centre in 2019.

I am a member of numerous energy and environmental communities, including the European Association of Environmental and Resources Economists (EAERE), Energy Academy Indonesia (Ecadin), Indonesia Energy Transition Network, and Yayasan Pembangunan Berkelanjutan-LEAD Indonesia. I was a volunteer at ‘Indonesia Mengglobal’ and ‘I Care Indonesia’ and the leader of PLN Green Community. I recently joined the Climate Reality Project, an NGO led by former US Vice President Al Gore.

With my affinity with academia and my past and current experience in managing the realities of the energy sector in transition, I keen to learn and contribute to advancing the practice of resilience, especially given the energy sector’s vulnerabilities to climate change and its societal impacts. Under the 4TU.RE fellowship program, I work together with Prof. Tatiana Filatova in investigating the societal impacts of weather and climate-related electricity supply disruptions and the society’s adaptive capacity to those disruptions. Our goal is twofold: firstly, to add to the academic literature regarding the climate-resilient energy society, and secondly, to contribute to the policy development on the low-carbon and climate-resilient energy sector. My aim is also to explore collaborations with the wider 4TU resilience communities.
