Drivers of Change is an exhibition that represents the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) during the Dutch Design Week. During the virtual edition of the DDW2020, about 40 project were presented that offer solutions to many challenges of today and tomorrow. Like new environments, smart tools, designs for better health and a more sustainable society.

One of the presented projects during Drivers of Change 2020 is the project ‘’Digital Touch’’ by our 4TU H&T PhD-student Sima Ipakchian Askari.

Due to COVID-19 pandemic, we can no longer hug our friends or family. It has shown us the great importance of touch.  A digital, or ‘mediated’ touch is a potential solution for such circumstances, when skin-to-skin contact is impossible.

Sima’s research is all about the digital touch! How do people experience a mediated touch, what is their interest in these types of technologies. Furthermore, she explores how contextual factors such as sender of the touch, textual tone of a message and input medium used to send the digital touch affect people’s affective responses. Aside from these topics Sima’s work also investigates what important characteristics of such technologies are and under which circumstances people find them most useful.
