H&T PhD Writing Seminar

4TU Delft
4TU Eindhoven
4TU Twente
4TU Wageningen

Write-a-thon Review

In May, the 4TU.H&T PhD students self-organized a 3-day writing retreat by the beach in Makkum, Friesland, in the north of the Netherlands. Writing is critical to all PhD students, yet it is often a solitary activity. The main goals were to get peer feedback early on and to improve drafts in progress. Both are essential to healthy collaborative research, the greater aim of our 4TU Federation.

All participants would recommend the event to other PhD students, since “it was fun to engage in academic thinking in a more social, intimate way - something that not everybody has the chance to do during work or at home”. Notably: “the feedback given by others helped me better understand how my ideas are perceived and what assumptions I have taken for granted that need to be made more explicit”. Framing the writing process in a social manner is beneficial for many, but even more so for early stage researchers. We hope to arrange further efforts in creating a supportive research environment.
