We are excited to announce that the 4TU.Ethics workshop about critical theory and philosophy of technology will take place on the 13th of December 2024 at Utrecht University! Our target audience are PhD candidates working on the ethics and philosophy of technology with a curiosity towards critical theory. Other interested people (ReMa students and other researchers) are welcome to inquire about possibilities via email. The day will be centered around the question:
“How is critical theory relevant for contemporary philosophy of technology?” Other subtopics are: “Why does critical theory not figure prominently in contemporary philosophy and ethics of technology?” & “What can critical theory offer that other methods do not?”
The preliminary program is as follows:
- 9:30 – 10:00: Arrival
- 10:00 – 11:00: dr. Thijs Lijster: What is critical theory and why is it relevant for the study of technology?
- 11:00 – 11:30: coffee break
- 11:30 – 12:15: dr. Rosalie Waelen: AI Ethics as a critical theory?
- 12:15 – 13:15: Lunch break
- 13:15 – 14:00: dr. Tim Christiaens: Marx as a philosopher of technology
- 14:00 – 14:45: dr. Kathrin Thiele: Critical theory as a technology
- 14:45 – 15:15: Coffee Break
- 15:15 – 16:30: Panel Discussion with all speakers: Critical Theory Today? Relevance for contemporary philosophy of technology
