Imagine: a designer is asked to design a hospital room, which helps patients feel more at home. How does the designer know whether people would appreciate his design? Derya Ozcelik developed an interview method that allows designers to discuss ideas with users in an early stage. The method uses narrative techniques. In the hospital room example, the designer first asks how the user has experienced his stay in an existing hospital room. The designer then introduces his concept and invites the user to imagine how he would have experienced his stay if he had stayed in the new hospital room. Derya Ozcelik: “You guide the user from a real-life experience into a new situation. This helps the user to envision the new situation and discuss it with the designer.”
