RESEARCHER IN THE SPOTLIGHT – BIG DATA:

NELLY LITVAK

In this edition we would like to put Nelly Litvak in the spotlight. She is professor in the research group Stochastic Operations Research of the University of Twente. There she works on data science in algorithms of complex social networks. For example she tries to tackle questions as “Can we make our society more efficient by acting upon social interactions on Twitter and Facebook?” using random graphs and stochastic processes. When you get to know her better you know that she is originally from Russia and is very enthusiastic about science. Her enthusiasm is visible in the four non-fiction books she wrote on the combination of science, love and growing up. She is an amazing speaker, so come listen to her on the Big Data event on the 24th of November and take a look on her website to check out her books.

PROJECT IN THE SPOTLIGHT – HEALTH: MATHEMATICAL MODELS FOR HEALING BURNS

Fred Vermolen together with Daniel Koppenol from the TU Delft have developed various mathematical models to stimulate the healing of wounds, in particular burns. They developed models to stimulate the healing of different types of wounds and the development of scars, thus helping to unravel the mechanisms behind normal and abnormal wound healing. This also offers perspectives on alternatives for animal testing. Read the full article here. And watch the video on the research here.

NEWS UPDATES - RESEARCH:

TTW PERSPECTIEF – WATER

Our researchers from all the technical universities of 4TU AMI are in the last round of the STW perspectief of NWO. Together with amongst others Rijkswaterstaat, the port of Amsterdam and the port of Rotterdam they applied for this STW perspectief. The project is about the salt intrusion from the sea in our fresh water. This salt water intrusion has huge effects on our fresh water and is a major problem to keep our water potable. In our next newsletter you will read on the result of the application for the STW perspectief.

NEWS UPDATES – EDUCATION:

BLENDED LEARNING

The four universities gathered their knowledge to create digital teaching material in an open source project called Blended Learning. This year 4TU AMI started out with one of the smaller projects that falls under Blended Learning for students who need to catch up with mathematical knowledge that they need in their further studies.
4TU AMI is very curious to see the results of the Blended Learning project. This would be a flexible platform for teachers from all the four technical universities to share and use teaching material.
